Now, a little about my beginnings...
I was born in San Franciso, CA on in 1965. When I was 2 my family moved to
Alaska as my Dad and Mom took on a great opportunity with Alaska Airlines
to run the Alyeska resort in Girdwood. We lived in Anchorage after that till I
was 7 and then we moved to Ketchikan, AK in the Southeast.
Ketchikan was a really great place to grow up. It rained a lot there, averages
about 13 feet annually, but the winters weren't as cold as the interior like
Anchorage and Fairbanks. The fishing was the best part, Ketchikan is actually
known as the King Salmon Capital of the World!
Throughout childhood, my memories of growing up in Alaska were all
wonderful. We worked really hard, lots of chores, but we were afforded the
worlds best playground which was the great outdoors and the beautiful
ocean right in our backyard.
Throughout childhood I was attracted to music. I played trumpet from an early age all the way
through High School and was typically a 1 chair player. I played concert bands, jazz bands, pep bands,
st
everything. I played baseball till I reached Junior High School. I ran track and cross country as I
entered High School. My sophomore year was my best running year and I qualified to run in both
State meets.
I wanted to be a pilot and was on the track to go to either West Point or the Air Force Academy. I had
my congressional nominations from Senator Stevens and Congressmen Don Young. Unfortunately, the
dream was short lived as I didn't excel in my ACT/SAT results in my senior year. I decided to attend the
University of Alaska in Fairbanks to pursue my higher education. After a couple of degree changes, I
ended up pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration Marketing.
My college days were quite the party. I picked up playing the guitar right away and still love to jam
and sing to this day. I worked at the Sunstar campus newspaper part-time throughout my years in
Fairbanks. My summer jobs back in Ketchikan were some of the most memorable. I worked on
Tender for the seine openings, State of Alaska Fish & Game, Air Freight company doing deliveries and
tending to the float plane operations. It was a lot of great experiences!
In my junior year at college I had a near death experience
when I rolled my truck into the Chilkoot River in Haines, AK.
I was just driving back from Fairbanks for Christmas break.
As I came off the Yukon pass from Canada, I hit black ice, did
a 360 and rolloff the highway right into the river. It was
dark, cold, and wet. My roommate was with me and we
managed to survive it all without a scratch. Just life in the
adventurous Alaska.
Halfway through my last year in school, I met my first wife
Sherry Pipoly who lived in Fairbanks. We ended up leaving
Fairbanks together after I graduated in 1989 and went from
Ketchikan to Longmont, CO. We married in 1991 and I
joined up with McLane company who was owned by
Walmart. I met Sam Walton in that Fall of 1991, and surprisingly he passed away in March of 1992
shortly after that. His disease really came suddenly. He was a great man. My career with Walmart
really took off right after that in 1993 when we went to Clarksville, AR to open the first Grocery
